“Parents just don’t understand….” One could place an array of statements at the end of that phrase, but for the sake of time and relevance, I’ll say “Parents just don’t understand our generation’s conflict with working in a traditional system.” What our parents often consider laziness is actually a lack of interest.
Don’t get it confused though. Laziness and procrastination are self-inflicted ailments many young people use as a crutch; that group of people and this post are mutually exclusive. This post is dedicated to those of us who would prefer for our means of financial stability to come from work done in a creative space, rather than the blue collar “American way”…. no shade to the people who birthed us, of course. Our parents came from a generation gauged on survival rather than passion, meaning that money was their motivator and survival motivated them to make that money. We, on the other hand, are driven by things we’re passionate about…. things we would die (in many cases not an exaggeration) for. We understand that passion translates into authenticity, which in turn translates into a product that others will feel emotionally connected with. Through our passion, we have gained entrepreneurial spirits and a willingness to collaborate with peers. Oh, you don’t believe me? Well, check out Influencers: How Trends & Creativity Become Contagious. This short documentary features some of the industry’s greatest creative influencers you may not know. Some may be recognizable, but most, not so much. One thing’s for certain though, they were us once upon a time. The only difference is that they decided to chase their passion, and I’m willing to bet that in the end, their parent’s realized that they were wrong.
