Today the fan favorite photo platform has just added a new twist to the still image story telling application that the world has grown to love. Instagram with video. I was introduced to the application two years back by one of my friends from college .It was one the first well designed social communities that allowed you to share the world as you seen it through cool filters. The masses fell in love with the application but eventually became greedy and begin ask the question if they every would get video.
Realizing that the simplicity of still images is what made Instagram so cool I hoped that Instagram would ignore the request and never make the filtered video option happen. It’s easy to show a video of whats going on and allow the moving pieces tell the story for you anyone can do that, but taking a picture from the best angle possible and having it say everything that a video could say is where the real skill is.But the question kept re-appearing in tech conversations, on tech blogs, and soon I became worried that Instagram was eventually going to become a crowd pleaser and add unnecessary additions to the app. When nothing changed my fears fell into the background until last year when Facebook acquired Instagram . A Billon dollar that was a gift to the staff that spent countless hours working on keeping the application fresh and working correctly but a curse to those that know how cool Facebook used to be up until recent years .
As much as people don’t want to admit it the once simplistic social networking platform with so much promise has turned into a circus and I was afraid that it was going to turn instagram into a side-show. It took a year but without fail the circus tricks have begun . This year the social ranting platform known as Twitter birthed the spite child “vine” a well put together video platform that allows users to create videos in 6 second chunks. Having Facebook as a hypeman Instagram took took it upon themselves to add video to their own platform and Im not sure it was the best way to go. I happen to be one of those people who believe if it’s not broken then don’t try to fix it . Instagram was already perfect it simplicity is what made it work well with the masses.
Snap a photo add a filter and continue your day . It made photoblogging for beginners very easy and I would like to say they it has changed the lives of people by shining the light on a few creatives that may not have been noticed . I stated this and I stand by my statement “If Instagram gets video Instagram will go to shit ” this may be one of the only statements that I would be glad to be wrong about .
Update : Its been a week and five days. I am still not a believer. I have seen a few creatives that I follow use the video to show the work process and maybe some cool sightings . I have not attempted to use the video option I am sure I will sooner or later just to give it a try. I Am not Sure If it is just me be it seems like the video addition has given Instagram that same feeling that Facebook in its beginning , but it is no vine . The coolest part about vine was loops and the fact that you only had six seconds to do something awesome . Instagram’s 15 seconds doubles vine but gets stomped on when it comes to quality, and creativity. I have seen many people do short 6 second skits via vine so I am hoping to see a young filmmaker or animator set the bar high and hopefully people will start making some quality videos But this is just my opinion and I realize that maybe I am not following enough creative people . So If there is anyone that you know thats making some super cool instavids I would love to see them.
